Nonprofit Spotlight: Autism Society Bayou helps support families, educators

Autism Society Bayou is a support organization serving Assumption, Lafourche, St. Mary, Terrebonne and Lower St. Martin.

We asked Dawn Spinella, president of the Autism Society Bayou, to answer some questions about the nonprofit’s work and needs. Her edited answers follow.

1. What specific services do you provide?

Autism Society Bayou is an affiliate of Autism Society, which is the oldest and largest grassroots organization within the autism community.

Autism Society Bayou is a support organization that provides places to meet, get information and share experiences with real people affected by autism. Autism Society Bayou provides support to the following parishes: Assumption, Lafourche, St. Mary, Terrebonne and Lower St. Martin. It holds monthly support meetings where you can learn and share information about autism.

Our services include Family Fun Day, which is also our annual Autism Awareness 5k fundraiser, a scholarship program for individuals with autism who want to further their education by going to college or vocational school or individuals who are going to college in a field that will work with individuals with autism. And we have our teacher mini-grant program where we award $500 to teachers or therapists who work with individuals with autism.
