New implantable cardiac monitor offered at Heritage Valley is smartphone compatible

BRIGHTON TWP. — If Karen Mayo has any concerns about her heart — whether it be shortness of breath, a fast heart rate, dizziness or fluttering — she can consult her smartphone.

Mayo, of Industry, recently had a implantable loop recorder procedure to track any potential heart troubles.

In 2016, she was diagnosed with an atrial flutter, which may have been attributed to another medication she was taking at the time with that risk.

“If my heart rate goes to the 80s (beats per minute), I feel it,” said Mayo, who’s a nurse practitioner at Heritage Valley’s endocrinology offices in Sewickley and Aliquippa. “It’s an irregular flutter, but it’s fast.”

The implantable loop recorder is a small device implanted beneath the skin above her heart. The procedure was a minimally invasive surgery that took about 15 minutes to install.

She received her diagnosis after fluttering symptoms happened while at lunch at work one day. Since she already works in a doctor’s office, she had asked a physician to check her heart.

Understanding Electrocardiography

ATYPICAL ATRIAL FLUTTER Atypical atrial flutter is a rare form of rapid macroreentrant tachycardia that is difficult to characterize because of its instability . ECG Recognition Atypical atrial flutter rates may be in the usual range or much faster. The flutter wave morphology and axis depend on where the reentry circuit is located. Mechanism The rhythm of atypical atrial flutter is unstable because reentry circuits may vary in size and location. It is possible for a macroreentrant circuit in the ...
