Dr. Cynthia Maro: Alternative medicine used to treat allergies

As a veterinary student, I was required to get rabies immunizations. What I didn’t realize at the time was that my body was creating a long-term immune reaction that would affect the nerves in my right arm profoundly.

A month after getting my booster vaccine, I woke up with extreme pain in my arm and neck and had lost strength in my hand.

After nerve conduction tests, I was scheduled for traction and physical therapy, along with anti-inflammatory drugs. University doctors never related my health condition to the vaccine, but when I mentioned it to another veterinary student, she said several classmates were diagnosed with nerve disorders, including multiple sclerosis.

We compared symptoms and onset and found we had all begun having problems shortly after our booster. The vaccine was new and was reported to induce severe reactions, but we students were not informed about potential side effects.

Over the years, I had many relapses, but eventually, my studies in alternative medicine led me to my cure and to understand why my body reacted.
