Fort hospital opens simulation lab

The Fort’s new practice simulation lab won’t just benefit the hospital but all emergency services from police to fire.

The Fort Saskatchewan Community Hospital officially opened the Karol Maschmeyer Practice Readiness Centre during on Dec. 7. The $750,000 high-tech lab allows hospital staff a chance to hone their skills and learn new medical procedures on computer-run manikins.

The dummies are fairly lifelike with the ability to simulate breathing, a pulse, moans and groans and functioning eyes.

Everything is controlled and monitor through a series of monitors in an adjacent room where staff member controls how the manikin is feeling. Different dummies provide different opportunities with one being suitable for chest compressions to practice CPR while another can be used to simulate a birth with an actual dummy baby.

Tammy Burrows, manager of site operations, planning and projects for the Fort Saskatchewan Community Hospital, said the simulation won’t be limited to just hospital staff but other emergency departments as well.
